What is CSS?
CSS stands for “Cascading Style Sheets” and is a coding language that can be used to customise the appearance of your website.
In short, Style Sheets define how your HTML elements are going to be displayed.
Before enrolling on an online CSS course, it is advisable to know some HTML.

Do I need to learn CSS?
Now, it is perfectly possible to create nice looking websites from scratch without any understanding of CSS or HTML. In fact, I created this website in a couple of weeks without any prior knowledge of CSS or HTML with the help of an online internet marketing community. I used a WordPress theme (template) that enabled me to build this website from scratch (and 2 others) without writing any code – it was pretty much all done by dragging and dropping the required visual elements into the correct place.
However, every now and then I wanted to tweak the look of one of my websites and since I knew nothing about CSS I had to enter the world of “cyber-geek web development forums!” They are an intimidating place for the inexperienced – full of strange looking letters and punctuation marks. Now, with the help of these forums I managed to get answers to most of the questions that I had, but it was a very time-consuming process. As a family man with a full time job (for whom web development is a hobby), time is not something that I can really afford to waste!
So, I have decided to learn some CSS (and HTML) so that I can tweak my websites as much as I like without having to spend hours trying to find help on the internet. My other motivating factor is that I just like to know how things work.
The Best Online CSS Course?
I have scoured the internet trying to find a reasonably priced online CSS course. I have an “idiot’s guide” type book on CSS at home but, whilst that will be fine as a reference text, I learn best by watching video tutorials that have been created by experts in the field. I found some okay stuff on YouTube, but the problem is that you never quite know if the person posting the video is truly and expert and I want a structured and comprehensive course that has been positively reviewed by lots of past students.
I also steer clear of “monthly subscription” training providers like Team Treehouse since they can work out to be a hideously expensive option.
I have signed up for Zachary Kingston’s “CSS Development” course for the following reasons:
- It is a comprehensive course designed to teach you everything about CSS in 31 modules
- It has almost 7,000 enrolled students
- It is rated 5/5 by those students that have submitted reviews
- It only costs $59! ($10 with Discount Code below!)
Buy this course for just $10 here - expires 11.59 PST on 28th July 2014
Whilst I think that this is the best course for me, there are some other good looking CSS courses available at Udemy.
